How do I let him go, and not allow him to sweet talk his way back in? he's no good for me or our kids

It takes strength, a great deal of it. You have to move forward and cut him out of your life because he will try to worm his way back in. For all the nice things he's done, I guarantee the bad things he's done have been much harder to endure and you hate him but love him at the same time. You will not get things right til he's out of your life. Nice words only sound good for a moment but the pain he burdens you with will take longer to heal. Be strong and know that you will be ok without him. He does not define who you are.
