You are heading in the right direction. I remember before I came to believe I cried out to God in desperation and He obviously heard me. I wish I had believed earlier and saved myself so much trouble. A friend gave me a bible as cliche as it sounds. I opened in Genesis and God seemed to be as harsh and demanding and I wouldn't measure up. Then a few years later I realized I needed answers and I was out of money, having exhausted every possible method (counselling, support groups) I opened the bible to proverbs and it had all this advice so I decided to go to church to get my answers for free and that is how it started for me. The life I was living was dangerous and I believed God heard me that day and set my redemption in motion.
